ChatGPT Ads: Are They Worth It for Your Business?

A pale sage-grey speech bubble outline resting on a bone-cream ground, a small rectangular sticker tucked into its lower corner rendered in solid acid green, set slightly apart as though pinned on rather than part of the bubble itself.

ChatGPT ads started appearing for some UK users back in June 2026, and by the end of August the same feature had rolled out across another 30 European countries. Most business owners have not seen one, because most paying ChatGPT customers never will. But the tool for buying one is now open to anyone with a payment card, which makes this a genuine new decision for a UK business rather than a trend worth filing away and forgetting.

Are ChatGPT ads actually live for UK searches?

Yes. The UK was the first market in Europe to get ChatGPT ads, going live in June 2026, well ahead of the wider rollout to 31 European countries that OpenAI completed at the end of August 2026. So this is not a US-only feature waiting to reach us. It has been running here for months already.

Who actually sees one?

Only someone using ChatGPT for free, or on its cheapest paid tier, Go. Ads sit underneath ChatGPT's own answer, kept visually separate from it and marked "Sponsored", and are matched to things like the topic of that conversation, a general location, the device and the time of day, rather than to someone's past chats or saved memories. Anyone paying for Plus, Pro or an Enterprise account does not see them at all, which narrows who your money would actually reach.

How would a small business actually buy one?

Through Ads Manager, OpenAI's own self-serve tool, opened up to UK and European advertisers alongside the August rollout. You register as an advertiser, add a payment card, set a budget and a bid, and pay per click or per thousand views rather than a flat fee, much the same model as Google or Facebook ads. OpenAI has not published a minimum budget for that self-serve route, though its earlier US pilot reportedly needed a spend of $200,000 to $250,000 before a business could take part at all, so it is worth asking directly what a realistic test budget looks like before committing to one.

Is "Sponsored" actually a clear enough label?

Not necessarily, according to the body that would judge it. The Advertising Standards Authority's own guidance on identifying advertising says the word "sponsored" is open to varied interpretation and has previously been ruled an insufficient label on its own, recommending a plainer word such as "Ad" or "Advertising" instead. ChatGPT's own ads currently carry the word "Sponsored", so if you do run one, do not assume the platform's own labelling settles whether your advert is clearly identifiable under the CAP Code. That is worth raising with whoever books it, in house or through an agency, before it goes live.

Is it worth it for a one-person business?

Probably not yet, and that is the honest answer rather than the encouraging one. The audience is real but narrow: only people who have not paid ChatGPT anything, shown an advert matched to a live conversation rather than to a search someone typed with buying in mind. There is no published small-business case study, no typical cost per click and no track record long enough to judge against, which is a different position to Google or Facebook ads, both of which have years of data behind them.

A claimed Google Business Profile, honest photos and a website that actually answers what someone is asking reliably bring in enquiries, and none of it depends on a few-months-old advertising product finding its feet. Our costs and choices guide and the related piece on whether AI search optimisation is worth paying for cover that groundwork before you spend anything on an unproven advert format. If you have already done it and have money spare to experiment, treat ChatGPT ads the way you would any new platform: a small test budget, watched closely, before committing more.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a ChatGPT Plus subscriber to run an ad?

No. Buying an ad through Ads Manager is separate from your own ChatGPT account. Your advert will only ever be shown to people using the free version of ChatGPT or its cheapest paid tier, Go, regardless of which plan you personally use to set it up.

Does a ChatGPT ad replace Google or Facebook ads?

Nothing here suggests it should, yet. Google and Facebook ads have years of data behind them and a far bigger audience. ChatGPT ads are new enough that treating them as an addition to a small test budget, not a replacement for a channel that already works, is the safer read.
