Why Is My Google Business Profile Not Showing Up?

If your Google Business Profile is not showing, start by searching your exact business name and town. If it doesn't appear even then, the profile is usually unverified, suspended or waiting on a review. If it does appear for your name but not when someone searches your trade, the profile is live and the problem is ranking, which is a different job entirely. Work out which one you've got before you touch anything. It saves days of fixing the wrong thing.

Why is my Google Business Profile not showing up?

Usually because it hasn't been verified yet, or because Google has hidden it. Google's own help page on finding your business on Google is blunt about the first: "Only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search." The same page says a profile that breaks Google's guidelines is disabled or suspended and won't show to other users until the issue is resolved.

That page also names two waits that look like a fault but aren't. Changes to your business info can take up to three days to appear in search results, and rankings for a new business can take up to a month. So a profile you set up last week may not be broken at all. It may just not have arrived yet.

How do you check whether it's really missing?

Search the business name and town on Google Search and on Google Maps, the way Google itself suggests. Then sign in to the Google Account that manages the profile and search "my business", which is the other search Google's page suggests. Between them, those searches tell you which of two problems you have:

  • Nothing comes up for your name. The profile isn't public. The cause is almost always something written in your own account: verification, a suspension or an edit under review.
  • Your name finds it, your trade doesn't. Someone searching "dog groomer" in your town sees other businesses, but searching your name finds you. The profile is live and losing on ranking.

One more thing before you panic: ask a friend in the next town to look as well. Local results depend partly on where the person searching is, so a single search from your own sofa isn't the whole picture.

What is your profile's status telling you?

Your account shows the state the profile is in, and each state has its own fix. This table matches what you're likely to see with what Google's help pages say it means:

Google Business Profile not showing: what you see, what it means, what to do
What you seeWhat it meansWhat to do
A "Get verified" button, or verification still pendingGoogle has not finished checking the business is yours.Finish verifying, or try another method if Google offers one.
A suspension or disabled noticeGoogle thinks the profile breaks its guidelines.Read the notice, fix the cause, then appeal.
An edit marked pendingA change you made is still being reviewed.Wait, and check the edit again before changing it twice.
An edit marked not approvedGoogle could not confirm the change was accurate.Check the detail is right everywhere, then appeal if you can.
Verified, no notices, shows for your name onlyThe profile is live but not ranking for your trade.Work on the profile itself: category, details, reviews.

Verification. Google's page on verifying your business says reviews take up to five business days, and occasionally longer. If the "Get verified" button comes back afterwards, Google says it couldn't completely verify the business, and you can try again or pick another method if more than one is offered.

Edits. Google's page on what happens to your Business Profile edits says an edit ends up accepted, pending or not approved. Most are reviewed within ten minutes, though some take up to 30 days, and Google may refuse a change it can't confirm is accurate. A rejected edit can sometimes be appealed.

Suspension. Google says you'll get a notification in the account that manages the profile. If that's what you've found, our guide to getting a suspended Google Business Profile back walks through the appeal.

What if it shows for your name but not your trade?

Then nothing is broken, and the work is making the profile a better match. Google's page of tips to improve your local ranking says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and how well known a business is, and that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up. You can't change how far a searcher is from you. You can change the rest.

In practice that means the most precise primary category that fits, every service listed, real photos, accurate hours and a steady trickle of genuine reviews. It's slow, honestly. None of it is a switch, and Google doesn't promise any position for doing it. Our guide to setting up a Google Business Profile properly goes through each part in order.

What shouldn't you do while you wait?

Don't keep editing the same details to nudge it along. Each edit goes back into review, and Google says it may refuse one it can't confirm. Change what's wrong once, then leave it.

If the listing you can see belongs to someone else, or someone else is already managing your business on Google, that's a separate fix: see what to do when someone else has claimed your business.

Where does your website come into it?

The profile is how people find you on the map. It isn't something you own, and while it's suspended it doesn't show at all. A website keeps your name, number and work in front of people who search for you during a gap like that. If you don't have one, or the one you have isn't doing that job, see what ByRender charges: we build the whole site first, you look round it, and you only pay if you keep it. If you'd rather ask a question first, get in touch. For more on being found, the fix your website and get found hub has the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How long after verification will my profile start showing?

Google doesn't give one figure for that. Its help pages say verification reviews take up to five business days, occasionally longer, and that rankings for a new business can take up to a month to appear. So a brand-new, verified profile that only turns up for its own name is often just early.

Will making lots of changes help it show up faster?

Unlikely, and it can make things slower. Google reviews edits before they go live, says changes can take up to three days to reach search results, and may refuse an edit it can't confirm. A flurry of changes gives it more to check, so make the changes you need once and let them settle.
